I’m not sure, but I’ve been getting this message on my Craigslist posting: “This content is not appropriate for the public.” I’ve tried to post some pictures of my house and my dog, but it’s just getting blocked. What could be causing this?

Craigslist is a great resource for finding deals on used items, but some users are reporting that their postings are being blocked. This could be because the item is illegal or offensive, or because it’s being advertised in a way that violates Craigslist’s terms of service. If you’re having trouble posting an item, please contact Craigslist customer service. ..

Some sellers post copyrighted photos  or use copied text from previous web listings  to commit fraud or scam buyers  by selling counterfeit goods  (such as iPhones and iPads  that are not even manufactured  by Apple)  ,  faking successful transactions  ,  purporting to be selling the product from a different city or country  than where they are actually located  (such as Nigeria),  or posting false contact information. These sellers also often do not provide refunds for buyers, and those who try  to report them to eBay  and Craigslist  are often ignored.

In response to these issues, Craigslist has instituted two recent changes in its posting policy:

  1. One is that it now requires all photos and text listings posted on the website to be “100% original material.” This means you cannot use any copyrighted images or text in your posting.  A handy way to ensure that the photos  you are using  are not copyrighted is to use Google  image search  to conduct a reverse image search  for each image you use in your listing by entering the URL of the photo or photo filename into this search box.  You can also test it on Google SafeSearch  by searching for [image filename] “site:google.com”.

  2. The second change Craigslist has made is that it now refuses to list posts that claim intellectual property  rights in their content, but only if those claims appear at the top of your post.  It sounds complicated in words, but how it works practically is quite easy.  If you are posting  a copyrighted photo  or using the text  from a previous listing  that you do not have the rights to, then it will be blocked  when you try and post  it.  However, if that is not the case and your posting contains original content that breaks no copyright laws (such as an original poem or song lyrics), then your posting will still run.  Although these new policies may seem unfair at first, they are necessary in order to protect both online consumers and sellers.
