Nintendo has announced that it will be discontinuing the Nintendo Network ID service on Wii U. This service allowed players to connect their Wii U systems with other systems to share games, applications and other content. The company says that the move is due to the increasing popularity of digital platforms such as Netflix and Hulu. Nintendo says that it will continue to offer its own online services, such as Miiverse, but will no longer provide a way for players to connect with other Wii U owners. This decision comes as a surprise, as Nintendo has been one of the most vocal proponents of using digital platforms to keep players connected. In February, Nintendo announced that it would be providing free games for all Wii U owners who signed up for its Game Pass service.

You cannot transfer any eShop funds from one Wii U to another, nor can you purchase software directly on the other console with funds from the first. If you have saved credit card information in the Wii U Shopping Services area of System Settings, that information will be retained and you can purchase content on the other system.

If your Wii U fails, doesn’t turn on, or is lost or stolen, your Nintendo Network ID remains unaffected. However, if you transfer a copy of Skylanders SuperChargers Racing from one Wii U to another using the data transfer tool , both copies of the game will become linked to your NNID . If necessary, contact us for assistance with transferring software licenses.

Note that none of this applies if you perform a hard disk type A-to-A system transfer, so please don’t try it unless prompted by official support personnel!

Nintendo Account : This is what we’re after—the ability to use Nintendo’s new account system with our Mii names and friends list intact.

  1.   Initialize the Wii U with the new hard drive using the same name, date of birth and current address as your old Nintendo Network ID .  If you don’t match specifics here, such as a different city or state than one on file with Nintendo, you’ll be told that there is an account already linked to this data; use “View/Edit Profile” > “Transfer Your User and Save Data to New System” to correct any errors in your information saved by Nintendo.

3.   Log into Miiverse with your new NNID , link it to your Nintendo Account (steps 1-6 above) from the Notifications section in your Activity Feed on the Wii U Menu.
