Kik is a messaging app with over 200 million users. It’s popular for its simple interface and its ability to be used on multiple devices. However, there are some concerns about Kik’s privacy policies. Kik is able to track your location and activity even if you don’t have the Kik app open. This information is stored in Kik’s servers and can be accessed by the company or law enforcement officials who request it. Some people believe that this tracking violates their privacy rights. Others argue that it’s necessary for the app to function properly. Kik has not always been transparent about how it uses this data, so it’s difficult to know whether you have any rights to protect it. ..

If you use this app it’s important that you understand a few things about Kik, including how can you get tracked on Kik and what you should be wary off.  If you are familiar with the software already, then feel free to skip down to the section titled “Safety Tips” at the end of this article if you want.  So let’s begin…

The first thing that needs to be said is Kik works very similarly to WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and many other messaging apps available today as it uses your phone number as your main identifier.  Sometimes people who use this app will opt for an alias name when communicating in order to maintain their anonymity.  This feature is entirely optional though so don’t worry about choosing something which might reveal a bit too much about yourself.  Once you have chosen an alias name and logged in to your account a username will be generated for you, but this only applies to the chat feature (which contains group chats, one-to-one conversations and more).  Your username will also appear on messages if you decide to use the Kik Messenger web client so that other users know who’s chatting with them.

Definitely don’t post your Kik username on any social media accounts or even post photos of yourself using this app as there is definitely the possibility that someone could build up enough information about who you are through various means such as collecting selfies from different locations/apps etc and then either blackmailing you, contacting your family members etc.
