Amazon announced on Thursday that it will start charging a $3.99 fee for every card cancelled within the first year of issuance. The fee will increase to $6.99 after the first year and then to $9.99 after the second year. The change is designed to discourage people from cancelling cards before they’re used, which can lead to lost sales and refunds for Amazon customers. “We want customers to be able to use their cards as soon as possible and we understand that some may not want to use them if they know they’ll have to pay fees,” said an Amazon spokesperson in a statement.
